Major Feature: Alternative Desire
Beauty is, as they say, in the eye of the beholder. It is also, very often, an acquired taste. This is true of the worlds of literature, poetry, drama, music, painting and sculpture. Because their means if expression went against the classical cannons of their time, these artists' works were howled down when they fi rst appeared. The difficulties of getting boundary-stretching work accepted apply equally to designers, of course.

In the major feature that follows, we take pleasure in presenting five designers from different fi elds who have in common the fact that what they do is regarded as difficult, disturbing, upsetting, outrageous or just plain weird by some mainstream arbiters of taste but highly acclaimed by many others. We will leave it up to you to decide whether you think the creations of these designers are beautiful or not.

Featured Artists include Henrik Vibskov, Mark Holthusen, Nicholas Di Genova, Ray Caesar and Stefan Sagmeister.

Look who's drawing? Don't cry for them, Argentina
Volume 13 Number 1, IdN featured dozen of Argentinian illustrators. Across the illustrators' works, they speak out the devastating economic crisis their country has just been through. For as so often happens in an emergency, the extremity of what was happening to them forced an extreme reaction - and the result has been nothing short of a revolution on the design scene in Argentina, both in the kind of art being produced and the way in which it is being produced or, more to the point, marketed.
